Lois Keane Flowers decks West Vancouver's Kay Meek Centre in winter white

The occasion was a roast for Mayor Pam Goldsmith- Jones on November 9.

Three hundred guests waded into Kay Meeks’ lobby to bid adieu to their beloved mayor and share some eats and champagne. The walls were lined with an exhibition of fibre art in rich greens and browns and the mayor likes white flowers - So winter white amarylis they were.

As the holidays  approach, you may want to enjoy the glamour of white blooms in your home , or at your special event. Step out of the red.

Something Re-cycled?

When Kristin called for a wedding consultation and said she wanted to use some milk jugs that she bought through Craig’s List for her centerpiece bouquets, I was certain this would not be a go. After all, florists provide vases as part of their normal business. As for wedding centerpieces we want to ensure that the vases are appropriate for the flowers and the venue.

Re-cyled jug with "fresh from the garden" flowers

Well, ever tasteful Kristin chose perfectly. Her wedding at Seasons In The Park was just the setting for the celedon ceramic jugs filled with  a variety of garden flowers. And the yellow accent (check out the shoes) was oh so right!

 Thinking green,

Lois.

February: The Month of Red Roses and Rabbits

It’s Chinese New Year, the year of the rabbit and soon it will be Valentine’s Day. We are thinking of luck and wealth, of love and hearts. Red is everywhere (check the rabbits’ eyes). Red is a colour that symbolizes happiness. I am often asked by brides, “What flowers come in red?” There is a long list starting with roses and including orchids, tulips, anemones, calla lilies, gerberas, poppies, carnations, amaranthus and many, many more.  Another popular question is “What goes with red?” This is where the fun begins!

Red mixes happily with the other two primary colours, yellow and blue. Think of spring bulbs: red tulips, yellow daffodils, blue irises arranged together in a clear vase of fresh water.  They put a smile on people’s faces.

On Valentine’s Day we celebrate the simplicity and perfection of the red rose with its green leaves.

My favorite way of using red is to combine it with the colours closest to it on the colour wheel- violets, magentas, hot pinks; or reds, oranges and yellows. These combinations create a warm harmonious mood, while still saying RED.

If what you are after is a truly sophisticated look, go for an all red bouquet in deep dark shades with luscious textures.

Place your red order by February 4, before noon and receive our Valentine’s gift of  10%  off your total!

Bring On The Terra-cottae

Terra cottae is made from clay. “Baked earth” is the literal translation from the Italian. Because it is accessible and durable and can be made resistant to  cold winter temperatures, terra cottae has beeen used for thousands of years for making cooking pots, bowls and ovens; bricks and roof tiles ; pavements and pipes for waste and water and it has also been  a favored medium for creating exquisite ancient and contemporary art.

For may of us there is something deeply satisfying about playing with mud. As children we remember creating clay figures and putting them in the sun to dry, in so doing, participating in a custom practiced by cultures throughout the world and over time.

It's no wonder that flowers and terra cottae are such good companions. Both have a deep and lasting  relationship to the earth  and together they evoke the comfort of home .

Why not treat yourself or a friend to the joy of flowers in winter- flowers that warm your heart or that let you savour the memory of  fresh- fallen snow .
